I said I was going to do it. And then I did it. Total time from bad idea to car in my garage: 14 days, and a pretty good road story.

Can’t blow a waterpump, so there’s that.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:20 |

this is almost as bad as buying a nissan juke
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:20 |

How unsafe could it be?
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:22 |
|
Do it. Maybe there’s a local Oppo that could at least take a look for you before you go out there to see it.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:22 |

Oppo Double-doggo dare you
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:24 |

Depends on the speed, really....
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:25 |
|
This is the best worst idea ever.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:25 |
|
Like any of them?
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:26 |
|
Remember: David Tracy had it worse.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:28 |

Ralph Nader would be displeased, but screw him and do it.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:30 |
|
I’d be less worried about safety and more worried about breaking down.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:31 |

![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:31 |

I mean, at least it’s not a Pinto, I guess...
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:33 |
|
Are you going to fly to where the car is located? Why not trailer it?
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:48 |
|
Are those new tires? Maybe this could actually work...
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:48 |
|
I’d make sure your middle of nowhere route at least has phone service and reroute it if not.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:49 |
|
I know but I’m making a bad Corvair joke.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:51 |
|
Does it run and drive already?
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:54 |
|
Where is it located?
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:57 |

Regarding a similar purchase and journey, and asked by the caller what he should take with him, Tom and Ray said: “a tow truck.”
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:08 |

Eh if it explodes somewhere in the Rockies ill come help because I’m a sucker for this kind of stuff.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:10 |

Do it.
I like corvairs.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:12 |

in my secret rust-free-corvair-gettin place!
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:13 |

Rust free, sooo definitely NOT Ohio.

roll of wrenches, fuel filters, extingusher, sandpaper. Bought a $500 66 Chevelle many many moons ago. It’s the car that taught me how to car. And we’ve had many zany adventures together. Plus I take into consideration breaking down and collecting with a trailer. But how much fun would it be to drive anknown dangerous mystery car 2,000 miles. plus the top goes down.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:19 |
|
It would involve the enrirety of Wyoming and Montana, (where I’ve broken down before and those folks are awesome good folks.)
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:19 |
|
they are, it’s out of the barn and on the road. still a terrible idea.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:20 |
|
it does. I don’t know how well. But bad running chevies and me go way back.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:21 |
|
Corvairs aren’t the only thing he ruined for everyone. But the old codger means well.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:24 |
|
Relative turn. I’ve got a rust free 66 chevelle 4 door. It’s not 100% rust free, but good as it gets in Canada. Car is closer to mexico.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:25 |
|
Keep in mind it’s not the kind of Chevy you can find parts for at every run of the mill parts shop! :P
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:25 |
|
But it may have chupacabras
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:27 |
|
Nope but you can get points at napa. would grab some before I left and put them in the glovebox like my malibu.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:31 |
|
Have had a chevelle, some chevettes, so if i got this, a corvette, a chev-air and a corvelle my collection of chevies would be complete.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:32 |

Not too bad. Big Oil usually means you’re good up there, as long as you don’t hit a blizzard.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:35 |
|
I flew out of denver friday going north. wound up landing in Colorado springs south of Denver and spent the day in their Fine airport. So yeah there’s weather on that road for sure. But speaking as a Western Canadian, The open American west is like nothing else if you enjoy the journey more than the destination.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:39 |
|
I’ve driven a lot of it myself :)
Was stuck in a blizzard in western Wyoming once in an Aveo and I’m debating whether the Corvair would be better or worse!
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:41 |
|
It would be colder for sure. but my 85 toyota can only give heat OR defrost on the highway in the winter. NEVER BOTH.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:44 |
|
Best plan would be to take my dog Otis, put aviator goggles on him and put the top down. That would be perfect.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:47 |
|
awesome! I’m sure this will bite me severely.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:50 |

I figure, no driveshaft, no cooling system. oil is cheap. just gotta keep a carb, distributor, and alternator happy, and pray the bearings have 2,000 miles left in them.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:51 |
|
Need a C-10 to collect all the C’s.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 16:56 |

dont for get the Canyonado
![]() 04/08/2018 at 17:08 |
|
I would if I could. So if you can you basically have to.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 17:34 |
|
Haha, it is. Anything other recent repairs suggesting that it might make it?
![]() 04/08/2018 at 17:50 |
|
no, I think it was pulled out, cleaned up, gotten running. Going on the assumption that it’s kind of a large, chevy beetle. never driven or worked on one, but won’t stop beleiving. I base this on nothing Whatsoever. Whatever happens It’ll make good oppo.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 17:56 |
|
and then I’d be all like aw yeah! the Engine’s in the back, muthfaucka!, It’s pretty easy on gas, muthafucka!, Old people tell me they remember these, muthafucka!, and also it’s got muthfuckin frunk.
I’d be able to go round saying that. And nobody could get up in my Grille.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 18:19 |

Is David Tracy on hand to go with you? This seems like his kind of show.
Consider yourself encouraged!
![]() 04/08/2018 at 18:21 |
|
I’m just a little old oppo, David is surely ten feet tall and made of gold.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 18:46 |
|
Oh man, if it runs and has good tires, I can see how it’d be tempting to try. Gotta be sure about the brakes and steering, though. Hard to judge that from 2000 miles away...
![]() 04/08/2018 at 18:54 |
|
I’ve coaxed some preety nasty beaters to move under their own power. There’s a chance this car is nice. Shows 36,000 miles. and still has upholstery.

My grandfather and his Corvair sometime in the 60s I think.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 19:21 |

Not much to go wrong, should be OK. I bought a 31 year old Lincoln that hadn’t moved more than around the block in 10 years sight unseen, and drove it 1200 miles home just fine. The problems only surfaced after getting home and running short trips around town.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 19:55 |
|
Compared to this Corvair, he’s five foot nothing and made of chicken.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 20:23 |
|
I assume it’ll all fall apart, just once it gets home would be ideal. I drove the $500 chevelle for about 10 years before I was a whole thousand into it.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 20:30 |
|
That is seriously impressive. Making me want a Monza even more than I already did.
![]() 04/09/2018 at 11:25 |

My trans am made it home from ohio, like a 4 hr drive. It can happen
![]() 04/09/2018 at 11:29 |

its a wierd chevy, but it’s a chevy. not an airplane
![]() 04/10/2018 at 02:44 |

Sounds like you are the guy to do this, and there might be no other. And if I was freed from my duties here in NYC, I’d be your wingman in a NY minute.
![]() 04/10/2018 at 03:02 |
|
It’s almost like, it would be stupid not to, it’s not a giant investment. Think decent used car money. It’s well within designated car monies. The thing I’m really digging on is driving an unknown car on a zany adventure. I’m not a rich man, but I’m pretty freedom rich. Got a pretty flexible schedule, so jumping on a plane and not knowing how or when exactly I’ll get back is actually do-able to a point. The craziness of it is my reward to myself. If it goes smooth as silk, lucky me. If all hell breaks loose, there will be some good oppo.
![]() 04/10/2018 at 03:08 |

If I fuck it up, we’re all gonna learn what’s inside a Corvair!
![]() 04/24/2018 at 00:58 |

it worked
![]() 04/24/2018 at 02:57 |

Now where would the fun have been in that.

I would use a trailer to transport my big girl panties, But this already had wheels on it and I’m known to be a little crazy.
